John Derby became the 26th person to be inducted into the SDGA Hall of Fame. His golfing accomplishments include one SDGA Championship. He was the Pre-Senior Champion in 1982. In addition to his SDGA Championship, John was the Arrowhead Country Club Champion in 1968, 1977, 1978, 1982, and 1984. He was also the Arrowhead Pro-Am Low Gross Amateur in 1975 and 1977, as well as the Arrowhead Senior Low Gross in 1987 and 1993. John was the Arrowhead Country Club Stampede Champion in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1987. He was also the Black Hills Pre-Senior Champion in 1984 and the Black Hills Senior Champion in 1987. In the SDGA Match Play Championship, John made it to the semi-finals at the age of 52. John served as the Chairman or Co-Chairman of the Arrowhead Pro-Am for 19 years. John started his professional career in 1956, where he was a shop assistant at the Lafayette Country Club in Orono, Minnesota . He moved on to the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis as an assistant, and then in 1959 was hired as the assistant golf pro at the Wayzata Country Club in Wayzata, Minnesota. John then became the head golf pro at the Wickenburg Country Club in Wickenburg, Arizona in 1962.
